What Makes a Good Return Policy & What to Watch Out For

It seems like everyone has different return policies these days, and sometimes it can get downright confusing! Let me explain what is important to know, and what can send up red flags.

First, let me urge you to follow our number one rule before buying from anyone -- online or not -- make yourself aware of the return policy! I promise it is simple to do, and will save you tons of headache down the line. I feel the company you are purchasing from has an obligation to provide you products and good customer service. However, you as a customer also have an obligation to be aware of that company's policies before buying. Win-win.

Okay, now down to the components of a great return policy, and some warnings as well.

First, check out the length of the return period. 30 days to return is typical, however, sites with much better, longer return times exist. (Like us! Here at MrWatch you can return for 365 days -- that's right, a whole year!)

Then, look for the details regarding how you can return and what happens once your item can be returned. For example, find out if you can obtain a refund, or if exchanges are required. Also, find out if there are any qualifications you must meet before your item is returned.

I will admit it depends on the industry; however, you should be able to return an unworn, unused item for at least 30 days and obtain a refund. If you are not able to do that, this is a red flag. (Disclaimer: Some sites or products, for example, sites that sell Halloween costumes, do not provide refunds -- but this is understandable.)

However, it is reasonable that many sites, ours included, do not allow items to be returned once they are worn or used. What is the definition of worn or used then? Well, I can answer that for the watch industry. If you just try on your new watch, and decide that it is too heavy on your wrist, or you just don't like how it looks on your wrist -- promptly take it off and return it. That is not wear, and it perfectly understandable and acceptable.

If you take all of the tags and protective plastic coverings off the watch, and wear it for even a few hours, this constitutes wear. It makes sense, for after even a few hours a watch can become slightly scratched, etc and all honesty, it is now no longer a brand new watch.

What does that matter you ask? Many websites offer items at awesome low prices -- ours included! As a result, policies are generally in place to make sure those prices can remain as low as they are. Also, at least with our company, if we send customer returns back to the manufacturer, they must be in brand new, original condition. So, if you return a worn, used watch to us, we can't send it back to the manufacturer. Therefore, we would have to damage out that item -- which would raise our costs significantly, which would in turn, raise the prices on our items.

Whew! Okay, glad we explained that. Another policy you should be aware of is how the company handles problems with your order -- meaning, what do they do if you accidentally receive the wrong item, or the item you received is damaged or defective?

In this case, the right thing to do is for the company to take care of this for you right away, with the customer bearing no costs whatsoever. You should either already have or be provided with a prepaid return label to send the item back. Then, the correct or working item should be sent to you with no costs incurred by you, the customer. If a company you are dealing with has a policy where you incur costs at this stage, it is a red flag. (As you may have guessed, we at MrWatch take care of any situations like this ASAP and you are not responsible for any costs at all. We also provide a domestic prepaid return label in every shipment).

Okay, that was a lot of information -- but good information that hopefully helps you in the future. If you have any questions or comments please leave them below -- we want to hear from you!

Keep watching for our next post...........

Chronograph Watches. What they are, how to work them, and why it matters.

Okay, so you bought a watch, and you find out it is a chronograph. Or, you are browsing watches and find chronographs. What is a chronograph, and why do you care? We'll tell you.

To get the technical part out of the way, we will give you the actual definition of a chronograph first.

Chronograph: a timepiece capable of measuring extremely brief intervals of time accurately, as a stopwatch able to record fractions of a second as well as elapsed time.

Okay, now that that is out of the way, we will explain it in much simpler, easy to understand terminology. First things first, let's look at a picture of a men's and a women's traditional chronograph:

As you can see, there are three small circles on each watch face. In watch terms, these are called "subdials". Each subdial has a function. However, it is important to note something here: just because a watch has the chronograph function does not mean you have to use it. I own the women's DKNY watch pictured here, and I have not used the chronograph once. I bought it because I liked the look of the watch, plain and simple.

However, it doesn't hurt to know how to use the chronograph. Many people use the chronograph function often! Okay, before we explain this, we do need to have a disclaimer -- there are several types of chronographs. However, today we will explain how to use the traditional chronograph, pictured above.

Simply put, a chronograph watch is a fancy term for what most of us think of as a stopwatch. Also, some common functions of the subdials on a chronograph watch include a moon-phase dial and a second time-zone dial.

How to Use the Chronograph: Okay - with a true chronograph watch, it will have the crown (which is what you use to set the time), a button above that and a button below that. (See the watches pictured above.) Now, if you press the top button, it will start the stopwatch feature. If you press it again it will stop. Press it a third time and it will begin again.

If you want to stop the stopwatch and reset the second hand to the 12 o'clock position, press the bottom button when the hand is stopped and it will reset.

Important Note: It is oftentimes assumed that the second hand should be ticking, and if it is not the watch is broken. This is a common misconception. So, if you receive a chronograph watch, and the second hand isn't ticking -- don't fear! This is not broken! On most chronograph watches, the large second hand that you think of as the watch second hand is actually for the chronograph. Meaning --

You should think of your chronograph as two different devices. One part is the timekeeper. This involves the hour hand, the minute hand, and usually a very small hand in one of the small subdials that ticks away the seconds. The second part is the chronograph. This involves the large second hand, and the other two subdials. Typically these other two subdials are for minutes and hours, or for partial seconds and minutes.

One last piece of info that is very helpful -- If your chronograph hands do not line up, meaning they are not all pointing straight to the 12 o'clock position, this is easily fixed. Basically, you just have to calibrate it to get everything to line up. Do this by pulling out the crown to the first position (which typically sets the date) or the second position (which sets the time) and pressing the top/bottom buttons. Chronographs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer on which buttons change which subdial -- but -- if you simply pull the crown out to the 1st position or the 2nd and press the buttons you should be able to figure out and calibrate your chronograph in no time!

Hopefully this clears up some questions regarding chronograph watches. If you still have some questions or comments, please feel free to comment on this post! We are happy to hear from you!

Until next time....

How do I know if a Website is For Real? 5 Red Flags Telling You When to Run and When to Buy.

It's happened to all of us. You are looking to buy something online, and you come accross this website with awesome prices. It's almost too good to be true! But in reality, it is too good to be true. Read on for warning signs of bad websites and how to avoid them.

Red Flag #1 - No Telephone Number

First things first, if the site doesn't have a telephone number anywhere, that is not a good sign. MrWatch has a telephone number, and it is shown in large font at the top of our website. Even better, we man our telephones with customer service staff. How does this prove anything? Well, many websites which are not reputable do not have any customer service staff, and good luck finding a telephone number at all anywhere on their website. Additionally, they will not respond to your emails, etc. Basically there is no way to contact them.

We at MrWatch offer three separate ways of contacting us. You can reach us via telephone, toll free. We also have a livechat feature where you can instant message with a customer service representative. Lastly, you can email us at any time. We resond to 99% of our emails the day they are received, pending it is received during business hours. 100% will be responded to by the next business day at the latest. (Our customer service team is available Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM EST)

Red Flag #2 - No Policies or Information Listed Regarding the Company

Many websites where the prices are very low will not have customer service staff (as mentioned before), they will not take the time to have real policies and will not tell you anything about their company. To be a real, functioning company you must have return policies, shipping policies, etc. MrWatch has all of our policies listed, has an FAQ section and has an "about us" section.

Red Flag #3 - Just a Plain Bad Website

Website design is another factor you should watch out for. If the website has a very simple, rudametric design, and just doesn't look very good, this can be an indicator of a site you should run from. However, if you view our site, http://www.mrwatch.com/, you can see that we have a great design platform and have a lot of detail, brand information, and the like. This is something that is important in separating the good websites from the untrustworthy.

Red Flag #4 - The Company Hasn't Been Around / Has a Bad Reputation

Reputation and longevity of the business is something else that is very important when making a buying decision. For example, we at MrWatch sell on Amazon.com. Our feedback rating on Amazon.com is 98% positive feedback. Additionally, we have a high customer service satisfaction rating on bizrate. MrWatch has been in business since 2003 - almost nine years. If we weren't reputable we would not still be in business!

Red Flag #5 - No Secure Checkout

This is a big one, and a very concerning one at that. If the checkout is not secure, basically your information is not secure either. How do you know if a company has a secure checkout? That's easy. First, the URL address at the top of your screen should change from http to https during checkout. Secondly, you should see an icon of a lock at the end of the URL. Both of these factors indicate that it is a secure checkout. Here is a screen shot to show you what to look for:

Hopefully these tips will help you stay safe and buy from the right companies online. Feel free to post below any tips you may have that we didn't mention. We always want to hear from you!!

Low, Low Prices. Too Good to be True?

Read on for the three ways we are able to keep our prices so low!
You know you are curious!

Okay, so, you visit MrWatch.com. You check out the latest trends in watches, and you also look at some of the traditional styles we have available. You find the perfect watch, and it is 60% off! But, then you squint at your computer screen with growing suspicion. How is the price so low? What’s the catch??

Nothing. We promise!

Still not convinced? Read on and we will put your mind at ease.

First, we were founded on the notion of providing watches to customers at the lowest price possible. Other jewelry stores and websites sell these items at full retail, which is a huge markup. We decided the customers are the center of our business, and the rest is history.

Secondly, we have a very large sales volume. So, to have enough inventory, we purchase in very large quantities from the manufacturers, unlike jewelry stores. As a result we are able to obtain extra discounts from the manufacturers since we buy in these large quantities. Then, we simply pass along the cost savings to our customers.

Thirdly, we are an online company only. We do not have any physical retail locations. Therefore, our overhead costs are very small compared to a retail store. Again, we pass along the cost savings of this to our customers.

Really, it all just boils down to the fact that we know that you, our customers, are the reason we are open for business today. We will do anything and everything we can to guarantee your satisfaction. And we mean it!

Tune in next time to read four factors that make a reputable website. We will tell you red flags to watch out for, when to run and when to buy. Until next time!

International Shipping – Everything You Need to Know

So you want to ship a package internationally. MrWatch can do that for you, no problem. Below are a few things you should know to make it as easy as pie.

Why do we ship internationally? The quality of our watches coupled with the prices we offer are unmatched, and we want to share this with as many people we can around the globe. Okay, that is great, but you want to know how much and how fast you will get your item. Read on.

Canada and UK: Standard shipping rates to Canada and the United Kingdom are $9.95, and it will be delivered within 4-14 business days. These are sent fully insured. We also offer Expedited Shipping to Canada and United Kingdom for $24.99, which is delivery in 1-3 business days.

All Other Countries Outside the USA: Shipping rates to all other countries outside the US are $42.99, and it will be delivered in 2-5 business days. These are also sent fully insured.

All international packages may be subject to the customs fees and import duties of the country to which you have your order shipped. These charges are always the recipient's responsibility.

So, that brings us to customs and duties. Basically, if we ship a package outside the US, it is subject to import taxes, customs, duties and fees levied by your country. We have no idea how much any of these fees will be. It is different for each and every country. Your respective country charges these fees, and they collect the money -- these funds do not come to MrWatch. Therefore, we have no control over this. To obtain an estimate, you can always call your local customs office and they should be able to help you out.

What if you return your order you wonder? No problem. After returning your order just contact customs and provide them with the tracking number showing you returned it to MrWatch. You will be able to have the customs you paid refunded by your country. Note that we cannot refund you for this, because we do not have these funds – they were not paid to us. Make sense?

Okay, good. Now, what about the warranty on your watch? Well, for many of the brands we carry, there is an international warranty. Some of the manufacturers have warranty service centers around the globe. This is not guaranteed, however. Some brands may only have a warranty center in the US. If you have a specific brand in mind and you wish to know more about the warranty, feel free to contact our customer service team and they will be able to help.

What else? Just a few things to keep in mind. Product manuals, instructions, warranty information packets and safety instructions may or may not be in the language of your country. This depends on whether or not the manufacturer put this information in multiple languages. Some do, some don’t. It is also possible that the watches and any accompanying materials may not be designed in accordance with your countries standards, specifications or labeling requirements. Additionally, if there is an electrical component, note that it may not conform to your countries voltage, which might require the use of an adapter or converter. Lastly, you are responsible for making sure what you are purchasing is lawful to import to your country.

Whew! Seems like a lot of information, but we want to make sure that all of you have all the info needed. In the end, shipping internationally is easy, and we do it every day! Like we said before, our prices and products are so good, how could we not share them with the globe?

If you have any comments, questions or concerns let us know. We are here to help, and we promise we will make shipping internationally simple and pain-free for you. Okay, well, stop reading this and get to our site – the sooner you place your order, the faster your package will arrive!

My Seiko Isn’t What I Expected! Help!

There is often misconceptions and confusion when ordering anything from the internet. You are unsure of the company, of the prices, and of the quality of the product you want to purchase.

Luckily you are ordering from MrWatch.com, so you know our prices are low and all of our items are brand new and authentic!

Even so, confusion or misconceptions can still be a problem. Some of the most common questions we receive deal with our Seiko watches. Worry no more, for everything will become clear.

We will list some common questions here and their answers. Okay, here goes.

Question #1
I received my Seiko, but it is in a different box than I expected and there is no manual included! Why?

Answer
Seiko has created over 10 different boxes to accommodate their watches. As a result, we have a myriad of Seiko boxes that are ever changing. Seiko, like many manufacturers, ship their watches separately from the boxes.

Now, regarding the manual question: many of Seiko’s watches are relatively simple, and are automatic with a date function. Or maybe the watch is automatic, with no other programmable features. As a result, paper manuals are not provided to us for these models. If you visit Seiko’s website, many of their manuals exist here to eliminate paper usage. Also if you have any questions regarding the functions of your watch our trained specialists would be happy to assist.

Question #2
I need to obtain warranty work on my Seiko watch. Where do I send this?

Answer
Most of our Seiko watches can be sent back to Seiko directly for warranty repair. However, we do carry the Seiko 5 Automatic line, and this line cannot be sent to Seiko directly. Why, you wonder? We’ll tell you! These watches originally were created and manufactured for the Japanese market, not the US market. We found the quality and price point of these automatic watches to be a good addition to our selection. However, as a result, Seiko does not provide warranty themselves for these models. Never fear though – we would never sell a watch without a warranty! These particular watches have a one year warranty through our company directly. We will handle everything for you. Piece of cake!

Question #3
When I looked at the Seiko watch I bought online, the picture showed the date as being red. But it is Wednesday today and the day is grey or black. Why?

Answer
For many Seiko watches with a date feature, the picture of the watch shows Sunday in the date window. Sunday is often the color red on Seiko watches. However, the other days of the week are grey or black. This is simply a design feature – we promise you received the right watch!

Question #4
I ordered a Seiko watch from MrWatch, and when I received it the days of the week are in Spanish! How do I get the day to appear in English?

Answer
Don’t worry – we can help. Many of the Seiko watch models with a date feature come with the ability to view the days in Spanish and in English. The fix for this is easy – just pull out the crown and turn the days of the week. As soon as you get to the correct day in English, push the crown back in and you are good to go! The days will now advance properly, and in English.

Question #5
My Seiko watch is running slow or my Seiko watch is running fast. What do I do?

Answer
If your watch is “Quartz”, or has a battery, you will most likely need to have the battery replaced if this happens. However, if you watch is automatic, there is no battery. Over time, all automatic watches generally need servicing to regulate the time. Even so, your brand new watch might need calibrated shortly after receiving it, or even right away. Calibration refers to servicing the watch to “fine tune it”. Basically this is when a watch service professional very carefully adjusts the timing of the watch so that they can hone in the accuracy.

Well, there you have it! Questions and answers to the most common questions we receive regarding Seiko watches.

If you have any comments or additional questions we did not answer, please post them! We love hearing from our customers.

How Do I Keep My White Band Clean?!? Six tips to keep it looking brand new.

So, you bought a watch with a white leather band, or maybe its silicone/rubber. It is a stunning, bright white and looks perfect.

But then….

You wear it for a bit, but after time it starts losing the brightness it once had. Now what? We’ll tell you!

A very common, easy method is mild dish detergent and water. Just take a cloth, moisten it and add some soapy lather. Gently rub it on the band, rinsing when finished. Be careful if your watch is not water resistant! In this case you may want to detach the band from the watch face first if possible. Let air dry to avoid mildew.

For leather bands, the best method is to use white vinegar and water. Fill a small bowl with water and add a small amount of white vinegar. Detach the band if possible, and let the band soak in the bowl - either for a few minutes or even a few hours. This depends on how dirty the band is. Then, rinse the band under water and wip away any dirt with a soft cloth. Let air dry to avoid mildew.

Another method is white toothpaste. Just squeeze a small amount on the watch strap. Rub this in your hands, and then rinse the strap. Again, let air dry for best results.

For rubber bands, you can also try a white pencil eraser. Do not use pink erasers, for they may leave pink marks on the band. If the eraser doesn't work, you can try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

For leather bands, you can also use a leather cleaner. However, you should test any leather cleaner before use, for some of these can either make the leather brighter or darker than it was previously.

Feel free to let us know if you have any questions or comments on any of these methods.

Good luck, and happy cleaning!!

Mechanical, Automatic, or Quartz? Why it matters, and what it means to you.

Okay, so, you have decided you want to buy a watch. Perhaps it's a gift for your son for graduation, or your wife for her birthday. Or, maybe it is a gift for you! Either way, you start looking for the perfect watch at the lowest price. Naturally, you end up at Mr Watch, right??

While cost, material, brand and other factors may come into play when you are making your decision what to buy, consider this: the watch movement. By movement we are referring to how the watch is powered to keep time.

A Quartz Movement means the watch is powered by a battery. Pretty simple, huh? A majority of our watches are quartz.

An Automatic Movement is where the watch is powered by the movement of your wrist. The watch does not have a battery, but the "insides" continue to work and the watch keeps time as the watch is wound. And, the watch is wound by just being on your arm that (presumably) moves throughout the day! But, don't worry - these watches will keep going up to 72 hours even after you take it off. (After that 72 hours you will need to manually wind it to start it up again.)

A Mechanical Movement is powered by the steady release of energy from gears that do need to be periodically wound. So, this watch will not keep going just by the movement of your wrist. Every couple of days or so you will need to manually wind these watches.

Those are some of the most commonly used movements in watches. Hopefully we have helped you in deciding what to get! However, as always, if you have any questions or comments on this we welcome the feedback.

Happy Shopping!!
